Biography

He was born in Edo. Around 1880, he studied Western-style painting under Honda Kinkichiro while teaching himself Japanese-style painting. In 1893, he returned to his hometown of Ushiku in Ibaraki Prefecture and became a farmer. He created satirical cartoons and illustrations of farmers for various newspapers and magazines of the day. In 1917, he became a member of the Japan Art Institute and began exhibiting works at the Inten that evoked the pleasures of rural Japan through depictions of lakes and fields. Guided by an agrarian philosophy, he described himself as a farmer-artisan. He was also known as “Kappa no Usen” for his depictions of kappa and other imaginary water creatures, as well as life in waterside villages. Usen is known for creating a uniquely magical world.
