| Summary | The work "Four Marsh Scenes," shown at the 1922 Inten exhibition, is one of Usen’s representative works of the Taisho era and covers four separate subjects: Hibara, Catching Loaches, Duck Coop, and Catching Shrimps. Of the four, Catching Shrimps is the most colorful and varied in content. People of all ages are drawn to the bonfire, with its trailing wisps of smoke. Small shrimp are drying on mats along the shore in the background, and the shrimp boats are returning across the marsh after a day’s fishing. The leafless trees in the foreground look like ghosts. In his review of the Inten, Haruyama Busho commented on "Four Marsh Scenes": “They reveal a realm all their own without affectation: dry, light brushstrokes and a simple mode of expression, all suffused with a sense of quiet. An inexhaustible fascination wells forth from these works.” |
