Biography

Hirayama was born in Hiroshima. He was there serving on a work brigade when the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945. He graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1952. He studied under Maeda Seison and became an assistant in the department of Japanese-style painting at the university. His work was accepted for the 38th Inten exhibition in 1953, and he continued to exhibit at the Inten. He was troubled with physical problems as a result of his exposure to atomic radiation, and around 1957–58 he began studying Buddhism. He attracted attention with “The Spread of Buddhism” in 1959 and continued to paint works on Buddhist subjects and scenes from the Silk Road, the ancient route of cultural contact between East and West. His original style is characterized by modern decorative qualities. He became a professor at his alma mater in 1973 and worked diligently to train younger artists. He made official copies of the ancient murals in the Takamatsuzuka tomb in Asuka and led a research team from his university to Tunhuang in China, where he also contributed to the preservation and restoration of the Buddhist murals there.
