SummaryHirayama participated in the Tokyo University of the Arts’ academic research expedition to ancient sites in the Middle East, as well as in the project to create a reproduction of the murals in the Golden Hall of Horyu-ji Temple, as a member of the Maeda Seison team. Deeply interested in cultural exchange between East and West, he spent his lifetime painting landscapes along the Silk Road. He also devoted himself to the preservation of cultural heritage, calling for the protection of the Mogao Caves in Tunhuang , Gansu Province, China, whose murals were suffering from deterioration, and accompanying Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita on his visit to China, where he helped arrange financial assistance for their preservation. Loulan was a thriving city west of Tunhuang, located at a junction of the Northern Route of the Tianshan Mountains and the Southern Route of the Western Regions, which skirted the Taklamakan Desert. By the seventh century, it had already fallen into ruin, and in 1900 it was discovered by the Swedish explorer Sven Hedin.
