Biography

Manzù was born in Bergamo, Italy. The son of a shoemaker, he was largely self-taught as a sculptor. From Etruscan and Romanesque sculpture, he learned the power of primal forms; from the Impressionistic sculpture of Medardo Rosso, he learned to exploit the effects of reflected light. Entirely independent of academic sculpture, his work combines nonclassical forms imbued with humor and sensuality with the assurance of traditional Italian craftsmanship. His oeuvre may be divided broadly into two groups: portraits arising from his sensual response to the female figure, including The Artist and the Model and Dance Steps; and religious works expressing sympathy for ordinary people, including The Cardinal, Crucifixion, and Descent from the Cross.
