SummaryDance Steps, a series based on the theme of a young ballerina, began after the artist met a girl named Inge in Salzburg in 1951. A balance is struck between the fully extended left leg and the right leg drawn back, as well as between the delicate arms and hands, one reaching forward and the other backward. The limbs harmonize with the flowing curves of the upper body and the slightly projecting breasts, creating a light sense of movement not found in classical sculpture. At the same time, the simply tied hair, budding breasts, and slender arms strongly evoke a fresh, unaffected modern girl who has not yet reached maturity. Manzù’s figures possess a lightness absent from classical sculpture, and his demonstration of the possibilities of figurative sculpture had a powerful influence on many postwar Japanese sculptors.
