Summary	Onchi Koshiro conducted experimental work in abstraction here, resulting in what became the first purely abstract works in Japan. At this early stage, he had already presented a series of abstract works entitled “Lyric. “ This title would recur frequently in his later work, and it is significant that this marked the emergence of “lyrical abstraction” as a central theme in Onchi’s artistic practice, through which he helped lead the development of modern Japanese printmaking.

Biography	Onchi Koshiro was a printmaker and book designer. In printmaking, he co-founded the coterie magazine “Tsukuhae” with Tanaka Kyokichi and Fujimori Shizuo in 1914 and created some of Japan’s earliest abstract prints. He was both a leading advocate of the creative print movement and a pioneer of abstract art in Japan. Possessed of a delicate sensibility, he nevertheless continually challenged himself to explore new forms of expression. In photography as well, he favored avant-garde methods, producing photograms and photomontages, as well as the Russian Constructivist-inspired portfolio "Hikō Kannō" (Sensations of Flight, 1934) and "Hakubutsushi" (Natural History, 1942), a collection featuring numerous photographs of plants in the style of New Objectivity. In the latter two works, he created a distinctive artistic world by combining photography with his own poetry and prints.
