| 作品解説 | 佐藤忠良の彫刻モチーフはほとんど人体に限られている。「首」と「子供」と「女」である。とくに「子供」と「女」は、大小の作品があるにしても全身像が多い。この限られた狭いモチーフの中で、作者が一貫して表現しているのは、重心の垂直性である。70年代から80年代にかけて、比較的大胆なポーズをとる女たちが表現されていく。脚を広げてつま先立つ女（「帽子-夏」）とか、ぐいと腰をゆがませた女（「女-夏」）とか、さまざまだが、どんなに姿態はゆがませても、垂直性のバランスだけは、一本しゃんと筋が通っていて、いうにいわれぬ崇高さがにじみ出ている。宇部市の図書館の閲覧室入口に立つこの「脚を組んだ女」は、さほどの大作ではない。少し傾げた首部と右脚を前に組んだ足部は、この人の作品の中では比較的動きの大きい作品だが、垂直性のけだかさだけは少しも失われず気品を保っている。 Churyo Sato almost exclusively chose human body – “head”, “child”, and “woman” in particular – as his sculptural motifs. Many of his “children” and “women” are depicted in their whole body, while their sizes may vary. Within these select, narrow motifs, the artist obsessively expressed the verticality of the gravity center. His works in the 1970s and 1980s featured female figures in somewhat bold postures. His women may spread legs and stand on her toes (Hut – Summer), dramatically twist her waist (Woman – Summer), or take other bold postures, but the vertical balance is always manifestly present to ooze inexplicable nobility. “Woman with Crossed Legs”, standing at the entrance of the reading room of Ube City’s municipal library, is not one of his larger works. Compared to the sculptor’s other works, the slightly tilted head and the right leg crossed over the left are more dynamic in movement, but the dignified verticality remains fully present in the elegant statue. |
