My memory of art is frozen at age 8, when I struggled to draw ancient Greek sculptures in a museum class. The shadow image of grappling with larger-than-life figures formed my idea of art, and persisted, to be resolved in maturity. Later came the exciting discovery of Japanese art, from architecture to pottery.
My past with clay informs my sculpture. I focused on mastery on a potter's wheel, spontaneity with clay, abstract study of shapes and spaces, and glazes. Today's work is about bright colors and unfolding forms, redefining space. The change from clay to aluminum has been freeing. Today I start spontaneously with doodling. I redraw, then detail on the computer for a laser machine. From cut-out forms I forge shapes with hammer and anvil, fold, twist, and weld metal sections into interactive moving parts that orbit playfully. My labyrinth of past insights leads to limitless artistic innovation.
I would like a crystal ball to see into the future.
