| 作品解説 | 宇部市の東の玄関口、国道190号線の阿知須町（※現、山口市）との境目、門前（前田）の芝生のロータリーに堂々と鎮座しているのがこの彫刻。ステンレスの円錐形の部分は全面がグラインダー磨きの効果で斑に光るので、気象条件によっては白い呼気のように見えるかも知れない。つまり、鉄板の上にのっかっている自然石（黒御影石）が人体の頭部のシルエットになりそこから円錐状に呼気が吐き出されているが如くに映るのである。ステンレスの巨大な円錐、自然石、四角な黒い鉄板、これら単純な形態の組み合わせがユーモラスなシルエットを想像させるようだ。ちょうど国道沿いの信号機のそばにすえられているので「朝のラッシュ時、ちょいと深呼吸を」と呼びかけているやに見える。 The sculpture majestically stands on the grass-covered rotary along Route 190 in Monzen (Maeda), an area bordering with Ajisu Town (presently part of Yamaguchi City) and serving as the eastern gateway of the Ube City. The conical part of the stainless work is ground to gleam in patches, possibly making it look like a white plume of breath when the weather condition gets it right. The natural stone (black granite stone) placed on an iron plane serves as a human head, from which the white breath comes out in a conical shape. The combination of simple shapes – an enormous stainless cone, a natural stone, and a black square iron plate – invites us to see a humorous human silhouette in them. As it stands next to a traffic light along a highway, it might be telling us to “take a deep breath during the morning rush hour.” |
