| 作品解説 | 鴉や鳩は60年代から今日まで一貫して制作されているテーマで、いわば作家の自画像的な存在だ。「私が生きている不思議さを仕事のなかに刻みたい。大自然のなかにいる鳥が雨や、風や、嵐や、喜び、かなしみ、の運命にいるように」。作者の生きる「道標」でもあるのだ。各地に設置・発表されたものだけでも鴉は全部で十数種あるが、中でもこの作品は最も大きい。異様に長目につくられたくちばし、むんずとつかんだ足元、荒々しい表現の中に嫌われ者への愛情がどこかこめられている。鴉は息子たちでもあるのだろう。柳原は向井良吉や大高正人と並び宇部市の彫刻展の生みの親でもある。愛情こめて作者が宇部市に寄贈した。 Crows and pigeons have been two of the sculptor’s consistent themes since 1960s and hence serve as a kind of self-portraits. “I want to express the wonder of my existence in my carvings – like wild birds existing in the rain, wind, storm, joy, sorrow, the fate.” The birds also serve as “signposts” by which the sculptor finds his way. More than a dozen crows by the sculptor have been installed or displayed across Japan, but this piece is the largest of all. The rough depiction of unnaturally extended beak and legs adamantly grabbing the ground oozes the artist’s love for the bird, which is generally considered as a villain. He might have seen his crows as his sons. Yanagihara, along with Ryokichi Mukai and Masato Otaka, is the founding father of Ube’s sculpture exhibition. The sculptor donated this work to Ube City with love. |
