| 作品解説 | この作家の作品のタイトルのつけ方は、いつもどぎまぎするほどユーモラスだが、作品の内容や外見もそれ以上に笑いを誘う。かぼちゃ形の大きな原石にほとんど手は加えない。ただ原石の頂上から真下へ向けて直径50cmほどに丸く切れ込みを入れて円柱を切り出す。その円柱を頭が出る程度にそのまま少し底上げしただけなのだが、なんと不思議や。円柱の頭はズズッと天へ向けて上昇しはじめたではないか。自然石のまま手を加えないだけに、円柱はかえって上への動きが強調される。60年代に頭角を現わした作家らしいふてぶてしさが愉快だ。 How the sculptor names his works is always bewilderingly humorous, but the works’ concepts and appearances are even more hilarious. The raw, large stone in the shape of a pumpkin is barely carved, except for a round column of about 50cm cut out straight down from the top of the stone. The column is raised just a little so that its top peeks out of the rough stone, but its visual effect is astonishing – it looks as if the head of the column is perpetually rising towards the sky. Because the surface of the raw stone is left untouched, the upward momentum of the column is even more striking. The impudence, characteristic of artists emerging in the 1960s, is exciting. |
