Comment | A free-blown footed cup in amber transparent glass. Light blue opaque glass has been splashed on the exterior (peeled off in places). The mouth rim has been wound with opaque white glass and finished by grinding. Pontil mark indistinct. The foot may have been fitted from another object. Splash glass was invented as a method of creating blown glass containers with random patterns similar to natural stone. The patterns are produced by sprinkling fragments of multicolored glass on the gob of glass at the tip of the blow pipe. Perhaps glassworkers came up with this technique in response to consumers' deep-seated admiration for colored stone containers. |
