Comment | Coins of the Byzantine Empire and the Sassanid Empire that preceded Islam feature the portrait of the emperor who issued the coin. People used coins that had the portrait of Sasanid emperor—especially Khusraw II—and the name of the Caliph engraved in Arabic in the beginning of the era of Islamic caliphates. However, since the year 692, or after the rule of Abd al-Malik of the Umyyad Caliphate, only letters were engraved on coins. |
