Comment | Most of the translucent glasses are slightly colored by iron (Fe) contained as impurities in silica (SiO2), the main component of glass. There are two types of chemical state of iron in glass. The bivalent iron (Fe2+) makes the glass pale green. The trivalent iron (Fe3+) makes the glass yellowish brown. The chemical state of the iron depends on the redox atmosphere of the furnace in which the glass material is melted. A reducing atmosphere turns trivalent iron into bivalent iron and the glass color becomes pale green, while an dioxidizing atmosphere turns bivalent iron into trivalent iron and the glass color becomes yellowish brown. |
