CommentThe coloring of the glass by iron is sensitively affected by the redox atmosphere of the furnace in which the glass material is melted. In a dioxidizing atmosphere, iron contained as impurities in silica, the main component of glass turns into trivalent iron ion (Fe3+) which makes the glass color yellowish brown. The lustrous part on the surface of the body is known as iridescence which is developed by weathering. The process leaves behind multiple thin layers of material on the surface of the glass that reflect light in complex ways.
