Comment | Red glass was casted into the shape of patella. Copper oxide added to the glass was reduced to metallic copper during heating. The application of "copper red" to develop the coloring indicates that the cup was originally red. However, it was probably buried in the ground for a long time, so that by the time it was found, the metallic copper on the surface had oxidized, and the cup was probably completely green. The green part that remains shows what the cup looked like when it was found. The rest of the green oxidized layer has been scraped off to expose the original red color |
