Comment | A tall jar made in alabaster and dated to the Achaemenid dynasty. Alabaster has long been used as a material for stone vessels in the Orient because of its beautiful striped patterns as well as its relative softness. We can observe the aesthetic sense of people at that period from the choice of stone calculated to show off the beautiful stripes in the finished container. The Roman natural historian Pliny writes that alabaster made the best containers for unguents, and there is no doubt that this object was used for keeping unguents. |
