Comment | Islamic forces spread to the Iberian Peninsula during the Umayyad Caliphate period (661 to 750). Lusterware, a pottery technique started in Iraq in the 9th century and was unique to the Islamic region at the time, appears to have been introduced to Spain by the 10th century. Muslim potters who remained in Spain even after the 1492 Reconquista (the effort by Christians to reconquer the land) continued making lusterware, which is now known as “Hispano-Moresque ware” or Islamic-style Spanish ceramics. |
