Comment | Huge eyes are drawn on the side of the cup. In the Mediterranean Sea coastal areas such as Egypt, Turkey, and Greece of ancient times, it was believed that a magical power dwelled in the eyes. Eyes were often used as the motif of decoration for buildings, ceramics, and accessories. Particularly in Athens, a lot of cups (Kylix) that exhibited such big eyes were made in the later sixth century BC. It seemed to be thought that the motif of eyes drawn on the drinking cups prevented trouble at feasting, including hangovers and scuffles. |
