CommentJars with flattened body were called hen-ko in Japanese. This shape of vessels are originally used by pilgrims in Middle Ages to carry home water or oil from the lamps burning in the sanctuaries visited, then they are also called pilgrim flask. This type of flasks are considered to be originated in eastern Mediterranean coastal region and they were increased in Western Asia since Parthian period, when the cultural influence from Mediterranean region became remarkable there. The outer surface was grazed in bluish-green though the original color was weathered off. On the central part of the body, we can see three round traces where the graze was peeled off. Similar traces are on the other side too. This is the trace of spacers not to weld together the piled flasks during firing.
