CommentDuring the period of the Abbasid Caliphate and the Fatimid Caliphate, roughly when Arabian Nights was created, books were replicated in handwritten manuscripts, as there was no printing technology. A fragment of paper held at the University of Chicago is the earliest known manuscript of Arabian Nights, which was written around the 9th century. It is believed that the Battle of Talas in 751 brought the Chinese papermaking method into the Islamic world. As a result, stories that had been told orally in the past were turned into books within about 100 years of the introduction of paper, which allowed stories to be carried down and read widely. It was at the beginning of the 19th century that printed books came to be published.
