CommentVarious theories have been presented regarding the use of this form of container. However, an illustration in a manuscript that depicts a late 15th-century bath shows a scene in which a container similar to this piece is used to pour warm water over the bather. Eight winged beasts with human faces and rosette patterns between them are drawn in sliver incrustation in the center of the body. A prayer is engraved at the top of the upper lip and over the copper parts, reading, “glory and fortune and power and happiness and contentment and interceding (with God) and satisfaction and health and…”
