Comment | This polychrome glazed pottery is called "Byzantine Sancai (three colored)" made in Syria in 13th-14th centuries. The glaze applied to the "Sancai" is lead-glaze to which lead oxide is added as a principal flux. Lead-glaze tend to flow during firing. This characteristic provide dynamic coloring when the some colored glazes and transparent glaze are applied. The concrete motifs such as animals and bird incised on the bottom of the bowl are Syrian characteristic which is not shown on polychrome glazed pottery in Mesopotamia and Iran. |
