CommentThe Elamite kingdom ruled the southwestern part of Iran. This area had been influenced by the Mesopotamian civilization since the third millennium BC and had emerged a state. Untash-Napirisha (1275–40 BC) was king during the Middle Elamite period, which was the peak of the kingdom and built ziggurat (stepped shrine) at Chogha Zanbil (“basket mound”). The signature of Untash-Napirisha is engraved into the head of this nail-shaped building decoration with a cuneiform. The architectural decoration in the shape of the nail head is joined to the wall surface with a mortise. Glazed ceramics were used only for decorating the palace in those days. The people would be surprised at the bright blue decorating a wall surface.
