| Comment | Petra is located deep in the valley in southwestern Jordan and was a base for the Nabateans, who were pastoral nomads engaging in trade in the northwestern Arabian Peninsula. Petra developed into the capital of the kingdom. In the first millennium BC, Petra turned away an invasion of the Seleucid Empire, and then dominated the area from southern Jordan to Damascus of Syria. These fine, reddish wares were made by Nabateans using a potter’s wheel. |
