| Comment | The Achaemenid dynasty is known for gorgeous gold and silver vessels, but hard, heavy stone vessels were also appreciated for ceremonial use. Granite with its striped and speckled patterns was particularly valued. Examples similar to this one can be seen among the artifacts found at Persepolis. Considerable time must have been spent shaping and polishing the hard stone, but people recognized in it a value that could not be had from glass or metal. |
