Comment | Mesopotamia was an alluvial plain where stone was scarce, dwellings were made from mud brick, and texts were written on in clay. Vessels made from colored stones brought from the upper reaches of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers or the highlands of Iran were used as utensils for temples and palaces and praised for their rarity and hardness. Unlike clay vessels, where were easily broken, beautifully speckled and striped stone vessels had a value that was equal to or greater than that of metallic vessel. |
