Comment | A long-necked jar covered with a striped marble pattern. The base is round, the mouth rim has been drawn out and folded inward. Intact. As a method of preserving perfumes, Pliny, the Roman natural historian, writes that "unguents are best kept in boxes of alabaster." In the Orient, where beautifully striped oil bottles, the striped patterns were also sought after in glass, with its distinctive transparency. |
