The winner of the Grand Prix at the 16th Contemporary Japanese Sculpture Exhibition is a stone carving of a boat, floating on a natural stone and trying to sail diagonally up towards the sky. It consists of a natural granite at the base and a ship above, made of artificially cut and polished granite. The ship bottom is meticulously polished black to strike out a particularly beautiful and powerful contrast. The piece oozes romanticism deriving from the exclusive use of stone as the material to make the form of a floating ship. When the present, shadowed by concerns for tomorrow, encounters things from the past lost in the memory in a solid material, our imagination starts to clearly remember where the romantic story heads for. Day and night, at the lakeside near Tokiwa Park, the stone boat will continue to stir dreams in viewers’ mind, visions of their destination in their private voyages.
