Morie, a pupil of Rodin, developed a tightknit friendship with prominent artists like Kotaro Takamura, Teijiro Nakahara, and Tsune Nakamura. “Miner”, which the sculptor produced in France, competed in Bunten (today’s Nitten) together with “Bunkaku” but failed, while Bunkaku won the third place. It was because the intense expression acquired through Rodin’s teaching was deemed “incomplete” by Koun Takamura, a member of the jury. In today’s eyes, however, the artist’s exceptional sculptural sense (in terms of the mass and movement) is amply present in the work.
