Biography

Born in Seto, Aichi prefecture. First studied ceramics at the Kyoto College of Industry (present-day Kyoto Institute of Technology) and then after World War II entered as one of the first class students in the sculpture department of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. One year before his graduation, had his first work accepted for display in the Shinseisaku-kyokai exhibition, and then exhibited in each of their following exhibitions. Received the new artist's prizes in 1955 and 1956, and was elected a member of the group in 1958. In 1994, his Where was awarded the Nakahara Teijiro Prize. In 1957, married Tamiko, daughter of the painter Kitagawa Tamiji, and was then influenced by Kitagawa's works. This was not only a case of giving importance to formal issues, but also recognizing the importance of the psychological element within the expression. This is particularly in the case of the works created around 1965 on the theme of the relationship between people and nature. He continues to create sculptural works to this day on the relationship between these two elements, with his works displayed in one-man shows, outdoor sculpture exhibitions, and in permanent monumental installations.
