Biography

After entering Matsumoto Fuko's Angado Gajuku (art studio), he joined Kojikai, a research group of up-and-coming artists. Later, he began receiving support from the Hara (Sanke) family. In 1914, he adopted his mother's family name, Hayami, changed his art name to Gyoshu, submitted his work to the reconstituted Nihon Bijutsuin Exhibition (Inten), and joined Sekiyokai, a group formed mainly by young artists. He stayed in Kyoto from 1917 to 1921, where he pursued meticulous depictions. In 1926, he held a solo exhibition, and in 1929 he submitted a work synthesizing realism and decorative design to the 16th Inten Exhibition. Furthermore, in 1930, he traveled to Europe for the Exhibition of Japanese Art held in Rome, touring various parts of Western Europe.
