Biography

In 1922, Kokei and Maeda Seison were sent to Europe by the Japan Art Institute. Over the course of eleven months, they traveled through England, Italy, France, and Egypt. During their stay in Italy, they visited Siena, where Kokei sketched women doing laundry amid the city’s historic architecture. Three years after returning to Japan, he created the pair of paintings “Laundry Place No. 1 “and “Laundry Place No. 2” based on these sketches. These are the only works based directly on Kokei’s travels in Europe.
