Biography

Hoshino was born in Toyokawa, Aichi Prefecture. He graduated from the Japanese-style painting section of the Kyoto Municipal School of Painting (now Kyoto City University of Arts) in 1948. The following year, he joined Mikami Makoto, Shimomura Ryonosuke, and Ohno Hidetaka (Toshitaka) to form the Pan-real-bijutsu-kyokai, a group devoted to innovation in Japanese-style painting. He carried on his creative activities through this organization until he left it in 1977. In 1964, he participated in a Japanese-style painting study group organized by the art critic Hariu Ichiro and, in 1966, exhibited work in the “This Is Japanese-style Painting!” exhibition. He was affiliated with the Hito-hito-kai organized by Nakamura Masayoshi in 1974. He pursued the establishment of glue-size painting as a form of free expression that transcended the conventional framework of Japanese-style painting. This approach remained consistent throughout his career, beginning with his work with the Pan-real-bijutsu-kyokai.
