Biography

Dubuffet was born in Le Havre, France. He studied at the Académie Julian in Paris and worked at a variety of jobs before finally devoting himself to painting in 1942. From 1944 onward, he regularly held solo exhibitions in Paris and New York, presenting grotesque yet humorous figures created with thickly applied paint and lines resembling children’s scribbles, and attracted attention as one of the first emerging artists after World War II. In 1948 he founded the "Société de l'Art Brut", organizing exhibitions of art by children and amateur artists, proclaiming his opposition to civilization and art. His "Corps de Dames" series of 1950 to 1951 was hailed as a precursor of "art informel”. He continued to be an active leader of the postwar art world, making paintings and sculptures with explosive energy and vitality. He died in Paris.
