SummaryThis painting is part of the "Momentary Places" series made between 1952 and 1953. The process of making this work is recorded in detail in the artist's notes dated February 10 and 14, 1953, so we can learn how he produced the thick, complex surface. First a layer of paste-like pigment was applied to the canvas. This was overpainted with thinner layers of paint and varnish. A relief affect was then created in the surface by cutting and scrapping the layers of paint with a palette knife and rubbing it with cloth and leather. This rough surface was then painted in orange and brown, and at the end of this process, two figures were drawn so that they seem to emerge by their own initiative from the chaotic substance below them.
