Biography

Picabia was born in Paris, France. He attracted attention early in his career with an Impressionist landscape style but soon joined the avant-garde. Around 1912 he was making abstract paintings in a style derived from Cubism. He went to the United States at the time of the Armory Show in 1913 and became a go-between for the advanced art circles of New York and Paris. During the First World War, he was a central figure in the Dada movement in New York, Barcelona, and Zurich, publishing the magazine 291 and making a series of “machine paintings.” After the war, he joined Dada demonstrations in Paris but withdrew from the movement as it fell into cliché. From 1925 on he lived in Cannes, making his presence felt in high society. He continued to paint in ever-changing styles and died in Paris.
