| Summary | Many avant-garde artists of the second decade of the 20th century, for example Léger and the Futurists, praised machine civilization, and machines had a special place in the work of Picabia and Duchamp. These two artists differed from the others, however, in finding curious analogies between machines and human beings and in using the motif of the machine to appear aloof and uninterested in the subject matter of a painting or in painting itself. This work is one of the last of Picabia’s machine pictures. In contrast to his works of the 1910s, with their sexually suggestive forms and enigmatic titles, this work presents carelessly strewn machine fragments, seemingly intended only to perplex the viewer. |
