Biography

Kansetsu was born in Kobe. He was the son of Hashimoto Kaikan, a scholar of Confucian studies from the Akashi domain. He first studied Nanga literati painting but then switched to the Shijo school after he began studying with Takeuchi Seiho in 1904. He traveled to Tokyo in 1908 and had his first work accepted for the 2nd Bunten exhibition. He moved to Kyoto in 1913, and from that year on made several visits to China, where he made an in-depth study of Chinese painting. He then traveled to Europe in 1921 and 1927. Through his study of old Chinese and Japanese paintings, he was able to absorb the methods of the Shijo and literati artists and pioneer a unique new form of painting known as “new literati painting.” His subject matter included landscapes, figures, and bird-and-flower paintings. In his later years, he created a large number of animal paintings. He was also a superb poet and authored such books as “Kansetsu zuihitsu” (1921) and “Nanga e no Michinori” (1924). He died in Kyoto.
