SummaryA monkey sits on a pine branch waiting for the moon to rise, with Kansetsu’s distinctive brushwork visible in the way the monkey is depicted. Mainly rendered in ink, the work uses a bit of light color on the monkey’s face and the blades of grass. Having studied the Shijo school, Kansetsu sought a superb, realistic style, but at the same time he was also influenced by such Ming and Qing dynasty Chinese literati painters as Shitao and Bada Shanren. This work reveals a unique combination of Shijo realism and the simple, rough freedom of literati painting. The sense of loneliness found in Kansetsu’s late depictions of animals can be found in this work, with its image of a solitary monkey sitting on a pine branch beneath the moon; the monkey’s rounded back and far-off gaze further the sense of isolation.
