Biography

Alexander Archipenko was a Ukrainian sculptor who played an important role in the Cubist movement. Cubism was founded on the premise of representing multiple dimensions of space on a two-dimensional surface, a concept that would appear, at first glance, to contradict the very nature of sculpture as an art of three-dimensional space. Nevertheless, the temptation to translate the achievements of Cubist painting into three-dimensional form proved irresistible. After moving to Paris in 1909, Archipenko developed an interest in so-called "primitive" art and, through Fernand Léger, became acquainted with Cubism. While exploring the relationship between the interior and exterior of form, he produced some of the earliest examples of Cubist sculpture
