SummaryOne of Archipenko's most revolutionary innovations in sculpture was the introduction of empty space into the sculptural mass by cutting openings through it. This new approach appeared for the first time in this sculpture. The head and torso of the figure have been largely cut away, leaving only outline forms, which make the remaining three-dimensional form of the left breast all the more striking. The hollow conical form at the lower right, when viewed from the front, is thought to represent the figure's left arm and may also suggest the parasol held in her left hand. The umbrella and long skirt are cut across diagonally, allowing the viewer to see both the exterior and interior of these forms. Both legs are rendered as board-like forms, and their angles convey a sense of movement. The smooth curves of the body beneath the clothing of the upper torso remain visible, creating a vivid contrast with the flat planes of the garment, which appears to have been cut open, and the diagonal lines carved into those planes. By revealing the various spatial relationships that coexist within a single figure, the work achieves a remarkable rhythmic unity. The coloring of the sculpture, which gives it a ceramic-like quality, was also applied by the artist himself.
