Biography

Innovations in modern sculpture emerged gradually during the 1880s and 1890s, becoming clearly visible after 1900. Rodin, born in the same year as Monet, may appear to have pursued innovation entirely on his own. However, no sculptor worked more firmly on the foundation of tradition than he did. Through his countless representations of the human form, Rodin made many original attempts that were highly significant in the history of modern sculpture. He created works using body fragments such as torsos and hands, found artistic value in damaged or unfinished parts, and experimented with combining fragments with other fragments and small figures with ready-made objects. Furthermore, he redefined the pictorial effects of changing light and shadow and the relationship between sculpture and its surrounding environment, while also expressing the passage of time through a single human figure.
