SummaryThe Age of Bronze was followed by the life-size figure Saint John the Baptist Preaching (1878), in which Rodin experimented with expressing the moment when the weight of the body shifts from the left leg to the right. On the occasion of the major retrospective of his work in 1900, Rodin created The Walking Man by assembling studies for Saint John the Baptist Preaching. The torso and legs used for this work were originally separate pieces. The roughly modeled torso has a large section missing from the back, while the legs are rendered with detailed modeling. The joints are not smoothly joined, and there is little flesh on the buttocks. In the treatment of the torso, one can see how Rodin purified the themes of time and movement. With both feet firmly planted on the ground, the sense of forward motion is emphasized by the larger size of the left leg, while the right leg takes an unexpectedly long stride, with the ball of the foot just visible behind. This work, which was cast either during Rodin’s lifetime or shortly after his death, is characterized by an unusually delicate technique and finish.
