Biography

He was born in Saga. He traveled to France in 1886 and studied under Raphaël Collin with Kuroda Seiki. In 1895, he returned to Japan and opened the Tenshin-dojo the following year, where he advised such artists as Wada Eisaku and Okada Saburosuke. Kume studied the Impressionists through Collin and brought this style to Japan. Collin and other Academic painters developed an eclectic style with a bright palette and a strong respect for light called “plein-air,” and this style was received in Japan as new and fresh. This trend led to the establishment of the Western-style painting department at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Kume’s students, including Wada and Okada, took up this style, and it became one of the established trends in Japanese Western-style painting. In 1898, Kume became a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, after which he dedicated himself to art education and art policy, creating very few works of his own later in life.
