SummaryKume traveled to France in 1886, and while living there with Kuroda Seiki, he studied under Raphaël Collin. This experience brought him into contact with an eclectic blend of Academicism and Impressionism characterized by a distinctive handling of shadows. This style then had a major impact on Western-style painting in Japan. “Autumn Landscape” was created on Bréhat Island, where Kuroda and Kume lived from summer to winter prior to Kume’s return to Japan. The last Impressionist exhibition was held in the year Kume went to France, and its influence spread as far as Academic painters such as Collin. Monet held his own exhibition in 1889, and Pissarro held a major retrospective in 1892; in this work, we can sense the painter’s response to such exhibitions. With its brightly lit haystacks and purple-toned shadows, this painting recalls Kume’s proximity to the Impressionists.
