Biography

Villon was born in Damville, France. His real name was Gaston Duchamp. After studying at school in Rouen, he moved to Paris where he worked as an illustrator. Around 1910 he devoted himself to paintings and prints. He became interested in Leonardo da Vinci’s theories of paintings and pursued an intellectual Cubist style, analyzing the subject matter on the basis of geometric principles. He was an important theoretical influence on the Cubist artists who gathered in his studio in the Paris suburb of Puteaux. This group, which called itself the Section d’Or (golden section), held an exhibition in 1912. In the 1920s he used a limited number of colored planes to compose his pictures, moving closer to pure abstraction. He joined the Abstract-Creation group in Paris in 1932. He died in Puteaux.
