SummaryVillon’s brother Raymond Duchamp-Villon died in 1918, and in his memory, Jacques made a series of paintings between 1919 and 1920 based on Raymond’s sculptural portrait of “Baudelaire.” One of this series, this work is a bold experiment in expressing three-dimensionality through combinations of geometric planes and color gradations. The subject is analyzed in layers of horizontal planes, and as a result, the verticality and volume which are the essence of “Presence” appear in a very pure and abstract form. It is noteworthy that the power of color, which was eliminated from the Cubism of Braque and Picasso, is used here as a means of transforming the weight and density of the subject into two dimensions.
