Biography

Warhol was a major American Pop artist. Born in Pittsburg, he studied painting in New York and worked for a while as a commercial artist. In the early 1960s, when Abstract Expressionism was losing its momentum, Warhol began using cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse, portraits of film stars like Marilyn Monroe, and photographs of disasters taken from newspaper reports as subject matter. He made silkscreen prints of these motifs, blowing them up or printing the same image over and over in a grid format. With this popular imagery and sophisticated color sense, he quickly became a star. In addition to his art work, he was known for his cynical statements on life and art which reflect the place of contemporary art in mass society. His prints and paintings are all fully-realized, competent works of art.
